and so i think that president obama has a record in a debate. we know who he is. he means what he says. and i think that this is the failure of romney's campaign, throughout the entire narrative of this campaign, we've never been able to really know who this guy is. he has to play tonight. >> i think chris's point about emotional intelligence is really important. but i will say this. training can get people to places they haven't been before. when president obama began, everyone said he was too professorial, too diffident, he didn't have that elmpathic quality. >> and when people are having a good time, you like them. we're having a good time. do you like us? we are now just a couple of minutes away from the big show. this is my favorite night in politics. this is part of the reason we are excited here. this is msnbc's live coverage of the first presidential debate. we're right back. our abundant natural gas is already saving us money, producing cleaner electricity, putting us to work here in america and supporting wind and solar. though all energy development com

, obama, romney, who's the better debater both have clear debate skills and shown those in their debates over the time. governor romney had very good debates in the republican primaries against his opponents and was very effective in those. president obama had some pretty good debates particularly the general election debates against senator mccain. the new format they're using i'm not sure it favors either candidate. it gives president obama a little bit more opportunity to talk at length which he wants to do about his record and about the things he's going to do going forward and also to draw some contrast with governor romney. for governor romney it may give him an opportunity rather than looking like he has canned answers to show people he's more thoughtful and warmer and more likable. >> dan balz, both warm and likable. thank you very much. thanks for being with us. >> thanks. >> up next, new questions about security and intelligence behind the benghazi terror attack. former ambassador to iraq chris hill joining us live here in denver. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" only

i mean, the great thing about president obama and the debates with john mccain, it really wasn't so much what he said. it was the way he held himself compared with the way that senator john mccain held himself, and senator mccain looked increasingly flustered. he looked frustrated with candidate obama. i think that the great thing about president obama is that he does have the capacity to be totally in the moment and to be totally funny. he is funny on his feet. and so, you know, for him to practice what he's going to do in case of a zinger, i think he's got the blessing of being rather spontaneous and the blessing of being up against someone who is incapable of spontaneity, reveals himself in those spontaneous moments like the 47% taped remark to be not a terribly likable person. so i think for the president to practice the way he handles zingers defeats what the president is particularly good at. >> well, actually barack means -- barack means in swahili blessed one, so you got that one right. will president obama challenge romney on the details of his vague tax plan, a tax plan almost
